[Link] The death and reinvention of management

From Steve Denning (author of  The Leader’s Guide to Radical Management) an interesting article about the current status of management (“as we know it today is seriously problematic: death of management”) and the shifts that need to occur in order to fix it:

  1. New goal: From inside-out to outside in
    the buyer is now in the driver’s seat. As a result, the firm’s goal has to shift to one of delighting clients.
  2. New role for managers: From controller to enabler,
    stems from the epochal transition from semi-skilled labor to knowledge work.
  3. New coordination: From Bureaucracy to Dynamic Linkage,
    meant as an agile way of working.
  4. From Value to Values,
    i.e. from a single-minded focus on economic value and maximizing efficiency to instilling the values that will create innovation and growth over the long-term.
  5. Communications: From command to conversation,
    i.e. a shift from top-down communications comprising predominantly hierarchical directives to communications made up largely of adult-to-adult conversations that solve problems and generate new insights.
